Fever detection cameras – a life-saving development

A key indicator of Coronavirus infection is a raised body temperature but, as individuals may not even be aware of this themselves, businesses and organisations relying on staff coming to work, the risk of spreading the virus remains extremely high.

Non-contact handheld IR Laser thermometers go some way towards testing multiple individuals but the process is still one-to-one, slow and impractical in high foot-fall scenarios.

The solution is instant mass body temperature checking using a Body Temperature Detection Camera System.

Our solution allows instant and accurate facial temperature monitoring of up to 30 people simultaneously and in a continuous flow. The readings are are shown live on a monitor and fed dynamically to a Network Video Recorder (NVR) which triggers an alert when a high body temperature is detected.

This offers very fast response times and aids in the detection of potentially infected individuals.

How does our body temperature detection system work?

Any object with a temperature above absolute zero will emit a detectable amount of thermal radiation. A thermal camera converts Infra-Red radiation into grayscale values and matches those grayscale values To temperature values through an algorithm model.

Thermal cameras with high-temperature accuracy can help detect elevated body temperatures which may indicate the presence of a fever.
Ideal situations are for measuring the elevated body temperature screening of employees, visitors, commuters, shoppers, and construction workers.

How do thermal imaging cameras work?

Thermal cameras detect temperature by recognizing and capturing different levels of infrared light. This light is invisible to the naked eye, but can be felt as heat if the intensity is high enough. All objects emit some kind of infrared radiation, and it’s one of the ways that heat is transferred. The hotter an object is, the more infrared radiation it produces. Thermal cameras can see this radiation and convert it to an image that we can then see with our eyes, much like how a night vision camera can capture invisible infrared light and convert it to an image that our eyes can see.

Can thermal imaging see through clothing?

Not really. Although, if, for example, a suspect had an unnatural foreign object under their shirt, its exterior area would appear “cooler” to the camera and indicate to management that someone may be carrying something concealed.

Can thermal cameras be used to detect a virus or an infection?
